TODAY'S DEVOTION. WRONG PRAISES!
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE ."The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican." (Luke 18:11 KJV).
There are good ways to praise God and also wrong ways of doing it. Indeed high praises open doors before God but the man in the verse above praised God and his door was closed. Why? Because he did it in a wrong way. Never praise God in an attempt to intimidate and condemn others. Do not ever engage in praise and thanksgiving to show you are better than people around you. High praises ought to be with a deep sense of humility to God i.e it is by grace and not by your own effort. When your praises makes people get offended at God as if God is partial it is wrong. This is common with testimonies during thanksgiving, some believers make it look as if others are not serving God enough.
That man in the above scripture was practically praising himself instead of giving glory to God and the Bible said he was discharged with condemnation."Jesus commented thus, "This tax man, not the other, went home made right with God. If you walk around with your nose in the air, you're going to end up flat on your face, but if you're content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself." (Luke 18:14 MSG).
I was in a church some years ago where a man who had been trusting God for a particular miracle had a special thanksgiving service. I knew him before the miracle came and how the absence of that provision made us encourage him severally. I was suprised that when the microphone was handed over to him he said ,"It is my reward of faithfulness because my faith brought it, praise the Lord." If his faith brought the miracle then we should give thanks to his faith or his faithfulness. Be careful how you give your thanksgiving, give all the glory to God and God alone.
Henceforth, choose your words of praise carefully, focus on what God has or will do. Like Abraham, keep giving glory to God in all situations and circumstances. John the Baptist speaking of Jesus publicly said, "He must increase, but I must decrease. [He must grow more prominent; I must grow less so.] (John 3:30 AMP). Be humble before the Lord and let Him lift you up, for He resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.
TODAY'S PRAYER
Father in Jesus name I refuse to give praise wrongly, in humility I will make your praise glorious. Amen
